Umang Street Vendors Cooperative Society Limited, Bhopal
Umang Street Vendors Cooperative Society Limited is the result of the collaborative efforts of the Institute of Social Research and Development (ISRD) in its project on the rights and entitlements of social security schemes for individuals dependent on the informal economy in Madhya Pradesh. ISRD has been actively working towards uplifting the rights of unorganisedlabour since 2014, supported initially by ActionAid/European Union and currently by the Azim Premji Foundation. Through these projects, ISRD has closely engaged with street vendors, construction workers, and domestic workers in Bhopal, recognizing the need for an association or federation to ensure the sustainability of these efforts.
Umang Street Vendors Cooperative Society Limited is a cooperative society established to provide loans and savings services to street vendors in the city of Bhopal. Our society was formed on January 31, 2024, by representatives of 51 street vendors under the Madhya Pradesh Cooperative Societies Act of 1960 vide Registration No. DR/BPL/140633 dated 31/01/2024. Over the years, we have dedicated ourselves to ensuring the social security of street vendors, advocating for their rights, and implementing the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014. In this endeavor, we have received invaluable assistance and guidance from the Institute of Social Research and Development (ISRD). To date, we have formed groups of 110 street vendors, comprising a total of 3000 members. We have also assisted 96 members in obtaining loans totalling ₹660,000 under the Prime Minister's Self-Employment Scheme.
